Turnout is a period in the agricultural calendar when beef and dairy cows are let out from winter housing to graze on fresh pasture. It’s a method of feeding cattle that offers many benefits including increased nutritional intake, which can in turn improve the quality and output of dairy or meat products later down the line.
Staying hydrated during grazing season
It’s important to offer cattle consistent access to fresh, clean drinking water during turnout since they will be spending prolonged periods outdoors – often in warm temperatures.
Farmers interested in maximising milk from grass should prepare drinking stations at opportune locations within the pasture. A dairy cow can require around 100 litres of water per day in order to maintain milk supply and overall health, so to avoid the risk of dehydration it’s best to place large-capacity drinking troughs within a close range of your grazing herd.
